     Nearly all breed clubs have a Code of Ethics, the principles of conduct
     governing an individual breeder or member of the club. The ethical code
     is a guiding philosophy to protect the health and future of the breed.
     Though not entirely enforceable in a legal sense, it offers the puppy
     buyer some insight into the motivations of  the breeders involved with
     that club.

     We encourage clubs without written codes to draft and adopt a Code of
     Ethical Breeding standards. Toward that end we offer links to available
     codes. Clubs that have not responded to our request for copies of their
     COEs or could not be reached are in italics. Please notify us if you find
     a broken link.

American Brittany Club

CODE OF ETHICS

Adopted November 30, 1996

    The following principles are to be used as an Educational Guide and a Tool for Brittany
    Breeders for the purpose to develop-op more Genetic and Disease Free dogs, while
    being ethical in all matters with the Public and with our Peers.

    Objective and Purpose:

    To promote cooperation and friendship among the breeders and owners of Brittanys
    and to encourage higher standards in breeding, training and showing of Brittanys in the
    field and in the show ring; to discourage the breed frown becoming split into groups of
    "field dogs" and "show dogs" and to strive to keep it forever a "dual dog

    Ethical Breeders should:

1 - Comply with all ABC and AKC- rules and regulations.

2 - Maintain a high standard of health, care, and cleanliness for...dogs under one’s care.

3 - Truthfully and realistically represent the Brittany being bred and/or sold in terms of Quality, Health, and Genetic History. Refrain from breeding a bitch or using a stud until they are two years old.

4 - Consult with your breeder and with knowledgeable, experienced members of the ABC, Regional Clubs, or local Kennel Clubs to broaden your understanding and knowledge of the history of the breed BEFORE breeding your Brittany.

5 - Breed only stock which are physically and temperamentally sound and in good health. No dog or bitch should be bred that is known to have serious inheritable defects or genetic diseases, such as:

        Canine Rip/Elbow Dysplasia

        Primary Epilepsy, a seizure disorder

        Eye disorders - Retinal Atrophy

        Undescended testicles

        Heart defects

        Extreme shyness/viciousness

        Other inheritable diseases or defects

6 - Not attempt breeding without the ability to distinguish between correct and incorrect physical attributes. This ability requires a careful study of the Breed Standard, principles of genetics, and a study of both the sire and the dam’s pedigrees. Breeders should study and learn the good points within our dogs, looking to both field ability and conformation.

7 - Have their breeding stock OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals), GDC (Genetic Disease Control) or Penn Hip certification numbers for hips on, at least, both the sire and the dam; preferably for three generations on both sides of the Pedigree. In addition, other tests (brucellosis, eyes, elbows, and other unspecified tests) should be declared in agreement between owners of the sire and the dam prior to breeding.

8 - Refuse to sell to commercial wholesalers, retail brokers, or research laboratories. -

9 - Have tails docked and dewclaws removed soon after birth. Prior to the sale of the puppies, initial shots for known infectious diseases should be given and worming administered. A buyer should be supplied with a four-generation pedigree, registration certificate, information on all veterinary care, and instructions for the care, feeding, and training of the Brittany.

10 - Remember your responsibility as a breeder does not end with the sale of the puppy. A breeder should have contact with the buyer of a pup throughout the life of the dog. This information will enhance breeding knowledge and improve the foundation for a good long-term breeding program. This will also help your Regional Club to grow with new members and possible participants and workers.

11 - Use spay/neuter agreements and/or consider limited registration if it is known or believed to manifest hereditary defects detrimental to the breed, THE LONG TERM INTEREST OF THE BRITTANY SHOULD BE THE GOAL OF EVERY BREEDER.

12 - Consider DNA finger printing for all dogs in your breeding programs.

        Those members of the Welsh Terrier Club of America included on the Breeder’s
        List subscribe to the following Code of Ethics:

        Breeders will:

            1. Keep the welfare and health the first criteria in breeding or selling Welsh Terriers.

            2. Breed only to improve their dogs to the standard of the breed.

            3. Maintain high standards in the care of their dogs.

            4. Not sell stock without true representation to the purchaser nor use misleading
                or or untruthful statements in selling or advertising.

            5. Not sell any dog without a limited registration and/or a spay/neuter contract
                unless there is an agreement between the breeder and purchaser with regard
                to showing and/or breeding (left to the discretion of the breeder)

            6. Comply with all American Kennel Club and Welsh Terrier Club of America
                rules where they pertain.

            7. Refuse stud service to any bitch that is not AKC registered or has faults grossly
                detrimental to the breed either in conformation or temperament.

            8. Not sell dogs or puppies to any commercial wholesaler or retailer. Nor
                will they donate dogs to auctions, raffles or research.

            9. Help purchasers with advice and instruction for the life of the dog and
                pass on knowledge to novice persons interested in showing in conformation
                or obedience.

          10. Accept full responsibility while pursuing and awaiting alternate placement
                 any Welsh Terrier the member placed with an individual who no longer wants
                the dog, regardless of the reason for return.

          11. Make referrals only to those breeders who are believed to adhere to the above.

        Noncompliance with any of the above rules may result in WTCA board action for
        immediate removal from the Breeder’s List.

        *(The Welsh Terrier Club of America does not guarantee the services of said member.)

CODE OF ETHICS

OF

IRISH TERRIER CLUB OF AMERICA

The Irish Terrier Club of America’s constitution requires its members to do
all in their power to protect and to advance the interests of the breed. To that
end I agree to abide by the provisions below which apply to my particular
circumstances either as an owner or as a breeder.

I agree that as an owner of Irish Terrier(s) I will:

1. - Follow the "Golden Rule" in that I will do unto others as I would have done
unto me in all dog enterprises;

2. - Always endeavor, with regards to my Irish, to act in a courteous and
responsible manner, which includes keeping my Irish under control at all
times, cleaning up after my Irish and trying to leave public places we frequent
in better condition than we found them;

3. - Be familiar with and abide by the rules of the American Kennel Club;

4. - Consider the welfare of Irish Terriers above personal gain/profit

5. - Be honest with others in all my representations about my Irish,
including issues of appearance and health;

6. - Never be a part of any illegal "sport" activity which could result in
harm or injury to any animal

I agree that as a breeder of Irish Terriers I will:

1. - Produce litters only to improve the breed and when adequate care
can be provided in raising and placing the pups;

2. - Always consider the age, health and well being of the bitch in making
my breeding decisions, including frequency and number of breedings;

3. - Never breed a bitch before she is one year old and sufficiently mature;

4. - Keep accurate breeding records and pedigrees, and aid in the prompt
registration of all puppies in accordance with all-applicable rules and regulations.

5. - Offer a written agreement of sale to all puppy purchasers, reserving the
right to provide a "Limited Registration";

6. -Place puppies with new owners only after I am convinced that the buyer
will provide responsible and humane care;

7. -To the best of my ability help re-home any puppies or dogs of my
breeding should any occasion arise indicating that this assistance is needed;

8. - Advertise honestly,

9. - Not be a party to the breeding of Irish for sale to "wholesalers",
or to commercial distributors of any description, including research
laboratory facilities;

10. - Breed only healthy stock, free of genetic defects, transmittable
diseases, unsound behavior, such as unwarranted aggression or
shyness towards humans;

11. - Provide stud dog services only to bitches registered with the
American Kennel Club or kennel clubs recognized by the AKC;

- Act in a responsible and helpful manner to all of my puppy owners;

- Encourage permanent identification, such as tattoo or microchip;

14. - Be honest with respect to the health, conformation and disposition
of all my Irish, dams, sires, and offspring.

Acknowledgment and Agreement:

As a condition of membership in the Irish Terrier Club of America,
I hereby acknowledge that I have read and understood this Code of
Ethics. I accept this Code in its entirety and I agree to be bound by it.
I agree further, that membership in the Irish Terrier Club of America is
a privilege, not a right, and that violations of this Code by me, may
result in disciplinary action, up to and including expulsion from the
Club, consistent with ARTICLE VI of the Club’s Constitution.
